花蓮縣阿美族現代珠寶藝術家毛皓亞(isin usin 苡杏 舞幸),這幾天參加縣政府113年南島極境考察團前往夏威夷時,帶著許多用花蓮縣獨有豐田玉製成的「時空之鑰」,引領來自世界各地超過30個南島語族國家代表,一同走入時空之門,穿梭歷史迴廊古今3000年,驗證南島諸國被發現的豐田古玉,在那遙遠的方舟神話古代,原來就是從臺灣花蓮漂洋過海而來的無價至寶!

The contemporary jewelry artist Mao Haoya (isin usin Yixin Wuxing) of the Amis tribe in Hualien County recently participated in the Hualien County Government’s 2024 Austronesian Extreme Expedition to Hawaii. She brought with her many “Keys of Time and Space” made from the unique Fengtian jade of Hualien County. These keys guided representatives from over 30 Austronesian countries around the world through the gates of time and space, traversing a 3,000-year historical corridor. They verified that the ancient Fengtian jade discovered in these countries, rooted in the distant myths of the ark, was originally priceless treasures that had drifted across the seas from Hualien, Taiwan.

花蓮縣政府出訪團隊於夏威夷時間6月6日傍晚,代表臺灣參加了第十三屆太平洋藝術節的開幕式。此次活動為促進太平洋地區文化交流,來自世界各地超過30個南島語族國家代表近2萬人齊聚一堂,共襄盛舉,場面熱鬧非凡、感動人心。

On the evening of June 6th (Hawaii time), a delegation from the Hualien County Government represented Taiwan at the opening ceremony of the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts. This event, aimed at promoting cultural exchange in the Pacific region, brought together nearly 20,000 people, including representatives from over 30 Austronesian-speaking countries from around the world. The scene was lively and touching, with participants coming together to celebrate this grand occasion.

花蓮縣與夏威夷郡自1971年締結姊妹市至今已有53年歷史。第13屆太平洋藝術節舉辦原民會台灣之夜 時,毛皓亞 Isin Usin特別致贈代表台灣花蓮的豐田玉給夏威夷郡長Mitch Roth,同時說明豐田玉在3000年前,就曾經漂洋過海來到南道語系諸國的歷史,Mitch Roth非常驚喜,表示他將會好好保存這分來自那麼遙遠地方的無價珍寶。

Hualien County and Hawaii County have been sister cities for 53 years since 1971. During the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts, at the Taiwan Night hosted by the Council of Indigenous Peoples, Isin Usin, also known as Mao Haoya, presented a piece of Fengtian jade representing Hualien, Taiwan, to Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth. He explained that Fengtian jade had crossed the seas to reach Austronesian-speaking countries 3,000 years ago. Mitch Roth was very surprised and expressed that he would treasure this invaluable gift from such a distant place.

太平洋藝術節自 1972 年開始,每四年舉辦一次,推動太平洋地區國家和地區之間的文化交流與合作。今年活動在夏威夷舉辦,吸引了來自太平洋地區30多個國家藝術團體和代表參加,讓這場文化盛宴更加繽紛多彩。與會者不僅欣賞到了各國精彩的文化展演,現場活動齊聚數千人,各國表現令人驚嘆及振奮人心,凝聚彼此力量,再次展現南島一家人深厚情誼。

The Festival of Pacific Arts, held every four years since 1972, promotes cultural exchange and cooperation among countries and regions in the Pacific. This year, the event took place in Hawaii, attracting artistic groups and representatives from over 30 countries in the Pacific region, making this cultural feast even more vibrant and colorful. Attendees not only enjoyed spectacular cultural performances from various countries, but the on-site activities also gathered thousands of people. The performances were astonishing and inspiring, uniting everyone’s strength and once again demonstrating the deep bonds of the Austronesian family.

花蓮縣府團隊邀請了多位傑出的原住民族藝文工作者與專家學者出訪,苡杏 舞幸就是其中之一,便是希望讓夏威夷與世界看見花蓮、看見臺灣,並期盼透過本次出訪讓更多人知道花蓮是南島語族的發源地,是南島語族文化圈的好夥伴。

The Hualien County Government team invited several outstanding indigenous cultural workers, experts, and scholars to visit abroad, including Yi-Hsing Wu-Hsing. The aim is to let Hawaii and the world see Hualien and Taiwan, and to hope that through this visit, more people will learn that Hualien is the birthplace of the Austronesian languages and a good partner in the Austronesian cultural sphere.

The Jade of Fengtian: Witnessing the History and Wisdom of Taiwan’s Indigenous Ancestors

isin usin 苡杏 舞幸說,花蓮是南島文化的發源地,考古發現先人3000年前花蓮豐田玉就與南島語系民族交流,當時臺灣與南島國家有船隻往來,阿美族靠著強大的航海技術,藉由風力航行太平洋上的古帆船,徜徉在「海上南島 玉路」,乘載著當時臺灣特有的玉飾,透過船隻傳播至呂宋島、婆羅洲、印中半島等地。而臺灣東部海岸部落航文化,在過去沒有公路時,阿美族古船也扮演著重要的角色。

According to Usin Isin and Wuxing, Hualien is the origin of Austronesian culture. Archaeological discoveries show that ancestors were exchanging Hualien’s Fengtian jade with Austronesian peoples 3000 years ago. At that time, Taiwan had maritime interactions with Austronesian countries. The Amis people, with their advanced seafaring skills, navigated ancient sailing ships across the Pacific using wind power, traversing the “Austronesian Jade Route” on the sea. They carried Taiwan’s unique jade ornaments, spreading them to Luzon, Borneo, and the Indo-China Peninsula through their ships. In the past, when there were no roads, the ancient boats of the Amis people also played an important role in the maritime culture of the coastal tribes in eastern Taiwan.

Yi-Hsing Ma-Hsiang once said that nephrite jade is a living fossil in the history of Earth’s development. Perhaps tens of thousands of years ago, residents in eastern Taiwan considered it an indispensable material for tools and decorations. The existence of nephrite jade bears witness to the history and wisdom of Taiwan’s indigenous ancestors. In contemporary times, she uses this beautiful and tough jade to connect millions of years of memory through her craftsmanship.

其實從阿美族現代珠寶藝術家毛皓亞(isin usin 苡杏 舞幸)的手藝,不難窺見3000年前為什麼豐田玉會成為南島語系民族重要的珍寶之一。

Actually, from the craftsmanship of the contemporary Amis jewelry artist Mao Haoya (isin usin Yixing Wuyou), it’s not difficult to see why Fengtian jade became one of the important treasures of Austronesian-speaking peoples 3000 years ago.

毛皓亞(isin usin 苡杏 舞幸)是花蓮縣吉安鄉《pakimad故飾》個人工作室負責人,她利用花蓮縣特有的豐田玉,精工細琢成匠心獨具、美不勝收的飾品,不禁令人驚豔:「原來在地的豐田玉寶石這麼美!」

Mao Haoya (isin usin Yi Xing Dance) is the proprietor of Pakimad Studio in Jian Township, Hualien County. She meticulously crafts exquisite accessories using the unique Fengtian jade of Hualien County, astonishing onlookers with their beauty: “Who knew the local Fengtian jade could be so stunning!”

苡杏 舞幸從小對族人身上配戴的Pakimad 故飾產生濃厚的興趣,認為除了是身體裝飾更是族群美感的象徵,她潛心研究、巧思設計,考上大漢技術學院珠寶系開始嶄露頭角,她力爭上游、勤奮向學,再進階國立東華大學藝術學院碩士學位,2023獲選為花蓮縣政府原藝百工藝術家,進而經營pakimad故飾卓然成出眾,如今已經是阿美族ㄧ顆閃閃發亮的金工業明日之星了。

Yixing Maixing has had a strong interest in the traditional Pakimad adornments worn by her people since childhood, seeing them not just as bodily adornments but also as symbols of ethnic beauty. She devoted herself to studying and designing them, eventually earning a spot in the Jewelry Department of Da Han Technical Institute, where she excelled. She continued her pursuit of knowledge, earning a master’s degree from the National Dong Hwa University’s School of Arts. In 2023, she was selected as an artisan by the Hualien County Government, further establishing herself as a prominent figure in the Pakimad adornment industry. Today, she shines brightly as a rising star in the Amis tribe’s goldsmithing sector.

As a “storyteller through adornments,” each piece is internalized by Isin Usin.
